What appeared to many motorists as an unexpected fireworks show along Interstate 75 could have ended much differently, according to findings released by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Following a Saturday incident in which a trailer loaded with fireworks caught fire and began launching fireworks in all directions, THP’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division conducted a post-incident inspection that uncovered several alleged violations involving the transportation of hazardous materials.
According to THP, the shipment was being transported by Dalton Beeler of Tennessee and was traveling from South Pittsburg to Knox County when the fire broke out.
Investigators found that the fireworks were allegedly being transported without several federally required safety measures in place. Among the violations identified were the absence of a current hazardous materials registration, no emergency response information for first responders, no hazardous materials shipping papers, and no placards identifying the hazardous cargo being transported.
Authorities also reported that the driver did not possess the required hazardous materials endorsement and that the vehicle lacked a required USDOT number.
THP officials cited the driver for operating without a hazmat endorsement, while additional findings have been referred through the appropriate regulatory channels for further review. Officials say potential federal penalties and any additional enforcement actions will be determined by the agencies responsible for hazardous materials transportation oversight.
“This incident looked like a fireworks show, but it could have been much worse,” said Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Matt Perry. He noted that hazardous materials regulations exist not only to protect the public but also the first responders who arrive on scene during emergencies.
THP officials emphasized that firefighters, EMS personnel, and law enforcement officers rely on shipping documents, warning placards, and emergency response information to quickly identify dangers and determine how to safely respond to incidents involving hazardous materials.
The dramatic images from Interstate 75 gained attention across Tennessee, but authorities say the incident also serves as a reminder of why transportation safety regulations exist.
