The Franklin County Rebels defeated the Marshall County Tigers 5-2 at home Monday, picking up their eighth win of the season and opening district play with a victory.
Franklin County wasted no time taking control, erupting for five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Gus Gardner sparked the rally with an RBI double, and the momentum carried through the lineup. Braden Jackson and Taylor Austin followed with RBI singles, and Colson Kelley delivered the big blow with a two-run single to cap the five-run frame and give the Rebels an early 5-0 lead.
Despite the fast start, Franklin County was unable to add to its lead the rest of the way. The Rebels put runners in scoring position in both the second and fourth innings but were unable to capitalize.
Marshall County made things interesting in the top of the sixth, using a two-run double to cut the lead to 5-2 and bring the potential tying run to the plate. With momentum beginning to shift, Gardner settled back in and slammed the door, striking out the next two batters to end the threat and keep Franklin County in control.
Gardner was dominant on the mound, working six innings and recording 16 strikeouts while allowing seven hits and two runs. Cameron Denton followed out of the bullpen and left no doubt, striking out all three batters he faced in a perfect seventh inning to secure the save.
Franklin County head coach Mike Crossland credited the team’s preparation but emphasized that the Rebels must stay aggressive and continue making adjustments rather than sitting on an early five-run lead.
With the win, the Rebels improve to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in district play.
Franklin County will travel to Marshall County on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
