October 3, 1941 – July 4, 2026
SFC Tennessee National Guard Retired John Jacob Magyar, 84, of Decherd, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026, truly going out with a bang. Born on October 3, 1941, he was the son of the late John Magyar and Eleanor Tomasch Magyar. He lived a vibrant life marked by his infectious humor, unwavering patriotism, and deep devotion to his family and faith.
John was a proud veteran of the Tennessee National Guard and a true staple of the Cleveland, Ohio music scene. As an active, founding, and celebrated musician, he played a massive role in the local band Ricky Vac and the Rock-A-Ways. His enduring legacy in music was officially cemented when he was inducted into the Local Artist section at the esteemed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Beyond his legendary musical talents, John was an avid outdoorsman who loved to cast a line and fish whenever he had the chance. His faith was also a cornerstone of his life; he was a joyful and active guitar player at his church, using his musical gifts to bring comfort and community to those around him.
John was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife Carol Ann Wolaver Magyar, who passed away in September 2020; his brother, Robert Magyar; and his sister, Bernadette Gibbons (Magyar).
