Franklin County Schools is inviting the community to take a step back in time and celebrate more than seven decades of educational history at Mary Sharp School.
On Monday, March 9, 2026, former students, teachers, and community members will gather for a special evening titled “The Foundation of Learning.” The event will honor the rich legacy of Mary Sharp School, which first opened its doors on March 15, 1954.
The timing of the celebration carries special meaning, as March 2026 marks 72 years since the school began serving Franklin County families. From its opening in 1954 until its closure as an elementary school in 1992, Mary Sharp helped shape generations of local students. Today, the building continues its role in education as the home of the Franklin County Board of Education.
“From its opening in 1954 to its closing in 1992, Mary Sharp School shaped generations of students. Today, as the home of the Board of Education, it continues to lead our community. This dedication honors that 72-year journey and the ‘Foundation of Learning’ it represents for every family in Franklin County,” said Rachel Shields, PR Supervisor.
Shields added that the event will offer attendees a chance to reconnect with classmates and former educators while exploring a collection of historic photographs, yearbooks, and memorabilia from the school’s early years.
The evening’s schedule includes:
- Fellowship Hour: 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
- Special Dedication Ceremony: 6:00 p.m.
Organizers encourage all members of the public — especially those with personal ties to Mary Sharp School — to attend and take part in celebrating the building’s lasting impact on the community.
Mary Sharp School remains a symbolic cornerstone of Franklin County’s educational heritage, and March 9 will provide an opportunity to honor the foundation it built for generations of students.
