Decherd Continues Search for City Administrator

DECHERD, TN – The City of Decherd remains without a permanent city administrator as officials continue their search to fill the position left vacant since July 2025.

Mayor Mary Nell Hess provided an update to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen during its February 9 meeting, acknowledging that while candidates have been reviewed, the city has yet to identify the right fit.

“We’ve looked at some contestants, but as far as the whole board is concerned, I don’t think we’ve found the right person who can do all facets of the job for the money required,” Hess said.

Alderman David Hillstrom emphasized the importance of continuing the search to secure a qualified candidate capable of managing the city’s administrative responsibilities.

Mayor Hess also noted that grant-writing experience is a key qualification the board is seeking in a future administrator, signaling the city’s interest in pursuing additional funding opportunities to support projects and operations.

The vacancy follows the controversial release of former City Administrator Rob Bennett in July 2025. Bennett was removed from the position in a 3-1 vote by the board, with Alderman Shuler Hopkins casting the lone vote in opposition to the termination.

Since that time, administrative duties have been handled on an interim basis by Mayor Hess.

City leaders have not announced a timeline for when the position may be filled but indicated the search will continue until a candidate meets the board’s expectations for experience, qualifications and compensation requirements.
