Community High Receives $5,000 Grant To Open Fitness Opportunities To All Students

A $5,000 grant will help Community High School in Unionville give students more ways to exercise, whether or not they play on a school team.

Bedford County Schools announced the Bridge Bedford teacher grant October 29. Criminal Justice teacher Chris Hobbs developed the project, called “We Like to Move It, Move It,” with the goal of reaching the school’s 487 students.

The money will purchase training equipment, including weight benches, dumbbells, lifting racks and strength-training machines. Hobbs plans to use that equipment for exercise programs shaped around students’ abilities and personal goals.

The planned activities will address strength, endurance, speed, agility and mobility. Nutrition will also be part of the program.

Students will have an opportunity to measure their progress through assessments before and after participating. Those checks will cover areas including heart rate, aerobic fitness and strength. Certificates will recognize students who show improvement.

Participation is intended to be free. For Unionville-area families, the project is designed to offer access to fitness activities without the cost of a gym membership or a long trip to reach exercise resources.

Hobbs hopes the program can eventually reach middle school students and children in fourth grade and above through a volunteer-led after-school effort. That expansion remains a goal, rather than an announced opening.

He also plans to pursue fundraising to maintain the equipment.

The award is one of 20 Bridge Bedford teacher grants supporting projects at 10 district schools during 2026–27. This year’s awards total $25,278, funded through last year’s CC5K.
