Please remember John Pomfret Long, IV. He passed away on Wednesday, July 29 at age 85. John was born in Sheffield, Alabama to Idalene Penney Long and John Pomfret Long, III.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM with Bob Payne officiating. Friends may gather at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 PM until the time of service to reminisce and share their memories of John.
He attended Sheffield High School, where he was a well-liked student, cheerleader, and a great dancer, once appearing with his dance partner on local TV. John had a deep appreciation for the natural world and enjoyed tramping through the woods, finding arrowheads in streams, and navigating his small boat up and down the Tennessee River below Wilson Dam. Once, in rural Ohio, he brought home a washtub full of honey and honeycomb that his mother packed in jars for the family to enjoy.
He joined the Marine Corp at age 18 where he was trained as an electronics expert. During this time, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, Milwaukee, San Diego, and Albany, GA. After being honorably discharged in 1965, he carried these skills to IBM and other companies working on early computing and eventually becoming a plant engineer at a few factories due to his advanced knowledge of factory systems, hydraulics, and mechanics.
He eventually moved to Lynchburg, TN in the late nineties and became a familiar face, frequenting the town square and always being of service to others. He wore many hats during this era including but not limited to working at Frito Lay, writing in a Tennessee magazine, being a regular at Woodard’s and BBQ Caboose, and attending his daughters’ band rehearsals and performances. Even after retirement, he kept a busy schedule. One of his passion projects included compiling generations of genealogy records for the Long family. He was also known by others as a steadfast believer in God and seeker of spiritual enlightenment serving three different churches as a traveling preacher in Moore County.
He was deeply loved and respected and his absence will be felt by many whose lives he touched within the local community and beyond.
He is survived by his wife, Mila Long, two sisters, as well as his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and grand nieces and nephews.
