An exhibition focused on the history and creative work of Sewanee’s St. Mark’s community will open Tuesday, Oct. 27, with a reception at 5 p.m. in Convocation Hall.
“Art, Storytelling, and Creative Placemaking on the Saint Mark’s Heritage Trail” will run through Dec. 11 at the University Art Gallery. The University of the South’s current events listing describes the project as both an exhibition and a workshop, presenting work already connected to the trail while inviting new contributions.
The exhibition supports the work of the St. Mark’s community and the Roberson Project on Slavery, Race, and Reconciliation. A storytelling map by Atlanta-based artist Joe Veazey is among the planned features.
The university’s Center for Teaching outlined the project in February. That earlier announcement identified the Cemetery Project, the Sewanee Praises Project at the Kennerly School site, St. Mark’s Grove and the Swim Pool among the trail projects the exhibition would highlight.
Plans also called for space where classes could display research and creative work, hold conversations and contribute projects during the exhibition. The upcoming show is intended to develop as students and other participants engage with it, rather than remain a fixed display.
The University Art Gallery is on Georgia Avenue between Convocation Hall and Guerry Hall. Its posted hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery closes during academic breaks.
The reception listing does not specify an admission charge. Visitors can call the gallery at 931-598-1968 for event information and to confirm hours before traveling.
