Franklin County residents planning outdoor activities this weekend should prepare for a noticeable change as a cold front pushes summerlike warmth out of the Tennessee Valley.
The National Weather Service’s Huntsville office said in its 10:27 a.m. Wednesday update that unusually warm conditions will continue through Thursday. Forecasters expect minor to moderate heat impacts across portions of the region before cooler air arrives.
The front is expected to move through Friday morning into early afternoon. Regional highs could reach the upper 70s to lower 80s before temperatures fall behind it. Forecasters expect the frontal passage to remain dry, with wind gusts near 30 mph possible Friday afternoon and evening.
By early Saturday, temperatures across much of the region are expected to settle into the mid to upper 40s. Saturday’s highs should reach only the mid to upper 60s, followed by another night in the 40s. Sunday should remain cooler, with regional highs ranging from the mid to upper 60s into the lower 70s.
For Franklin County residents, that means Friday evening outings and early weekend activities could feel considerably different from Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. People making camping, lake or other outdoor plans should check the local hourly forecast as the front approaches.
Until the cooler weather arrives, the weather service recommends drinking water regularly, taking breaks in the shade during outdoor work and scheduling strenuous activities during cooler hours. Children, older adults and people with certain health conditions can be more vulnerable to heat, even when the calendar says October.
