Franklin County authorities are investigating a suspected THC overdose involving a student at Franklin County High School on Wednesday, October 21.
School personnel and the on-campus school resource officer responded to the medical emergency during school hours, according to an October 22 release from Franklin County Schools. The release identifies THC as a suspected cause, not a confirmed medical finding.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said its Criminal Investigation Division subsequently obtained and executed a search warrant at a student’s residence.
In a Facebook statement, the department reported seizing approximately eight ounces of a substance believed to be marijuana, approximately two ounces of a substance believed to be a marijuana derivative, more than 100 devices believed to be THC vaping devices, drug paraphernalia and $3,655 in cash.
The sheriff’s office listed three charges against a juvenile: manufacture, sell, or delivery of a Schedule VI controlled substance; possession of drug paraphernalia; and acquisition of smoking paraphernalia by a minor prohibited. Those are allegations, not a finding of guilt.
The school district confirmed to 931Go that the student who experienced the medical emergency and the juvenile charged are two different students. No student identity or medical condition update was released.
Dr. Roger Alsup said in the district’s release that student safety, health and well-being are its highest priority. He thanked school staff and the SRO for their response and said the district is cooperating with investigators.
The district urged parents to discuss vaping and substance misuse with their children. Families with safety concerns or a need for counseling resources may contact their school or the district office at 931-967-0626.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division through Franklin County Dispatch at 931-967-2331. The investigation remains active.
Alsup and Coordinated School Health Director Chris Hawkersmith are scheduled to join The Starting Lineup on ESPN Radio Winchester Monday, October 26.
