SEWANEE, Tenn. — A bluegrass musical by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell opens Wednesday, October 14, at the University of the South, with six free performances scheduled through Sunday.
The Sewanee Departments of Theatre and Dance and Music are presenting “Bright Star” at Proctor Hill Theatre inside the Tennessee Williams Center, 390 Kentucky Avenue.
Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, October 14–16. Two shows are scheduled Saturday, October 17, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The final performance is Sunday, October 18, at 2 p.m. All times are Central.
The university describes the musical as a story inspired by real events, set in the Smoky Mountains during the 1920s and 1940s. Its story follows themes of memory, love, loss and redemption, accompanied by a Tony-nominated bluegrass score.
Sewanee’s production features a cast of 25, with dozens of additional students and community members working behind the scenes, according to the university’s theatre announcement.
Admission is free, and the university directs visitors to Theatre Sewanee’s Eventbrite listing to reserve tickets. The listing includes each performance date, giving residents the choice of an evening show or a weekend matinee.
Those planning to attend should select their preferred performance through the reservation page and check it for current availability before traveling. The venue is on Kentucky Avenue in Sewanee; the shows are being held indoors at the Tennessee Williams Center.
