Dr. Iris Naomi Bean–Boyd, age 73 of Murfreesboro formerly of Winchester, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. Naomi was born on July 29, 1952, in Winchester, to the late George Washington and Jennie Lois (Taylor) Bean. She was a 1970 class graduate of Franklin County High School. Her parents instilled the importance of a good education, and she obtained her bachelor’s degree in art education from Mount Holyoke; master’s degree in psychology from the University of California – Davis; and Juris Doctorate degree from University of San Francisco. Following her college graduation, she began working for as a legal aid in Murfreesboro and then worked for the State of Tennessee District Attorney Office. She moved to Illinois, where she worked as an attorney for the State of Illinois and later retired as the Administrative Law Judge for the Department of Public Health. After moving back to Tennessee to be closer to family, she began working as a substitute teacher for Murfreesboro City Schools. Growing up as a child in Winchester, she attended and was baptized at Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church and currently attended Bethel Community Church in Murfreesboro. Naomi enjoyed working with her hands no matter if it was in her flower garden, painting, or making crafts. She always looked forward to a good golf match or being in her kitchen preparing wonderful meals for her family to enjoy. She was a collector of all things and she kept her mind entertained by working crossword puzzles and playing Triva games. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Alphonsa Boyd; brother, Felix Wayne Bean; and grandson, Dylan Anthony Bean-Catencamp. Naomi is survived by her children Ayana Deloris (Don) Bean-Rice, Miya Jihan Brewer, and Patrick Molefe Dunn; grandchildren, Tyler Wayne Bean-Catencamp, Elyse Jennifer Bean-Catencamp, and Ryker Lee Bean-Rice; siblings, George (Patricia) Bean, Earl Bean Sr., Xylina Deloris Bean, Helen Bean, Rickey Bean, and Regina Payne; and a host of nieces and nephews. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 11:00am – 12:00pm at Watson Funeral Home with a memorial service following at 12:00pm from the Roy B. Watson chapel.
