The City of Winchester has been awarded a $25,000 Tennessee America 250 grant from the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial to support a major Fourth of July celebration planned for 2026.
City officials say the funding will help support “Lighting the Legacy: Tennessee 250,” a heritage-themed Independence Day event scheduled to take place at Winchester City Park. The celebration is designed to commemorate 250 years of Tennessee and Franklin County history while highlighting the region’s role in shaping the state and nation.
According to city leaders, the daytime portion of the event will focus on Tennessee’s cultural heritage through historical interpretation, educational exhibits, local traditions and community storytelling. Organizers say the event is intended to create a family-friendly atmosphere where residents and visitors can explore the area’s frontier roots and historical contributions.
The celebration will conclude with an evening fireworks display intended to symbolize freedom, resilience and the continuation of Tennessee’s story for future generations.
City officials say the event is also expected to serve as a heritage tourism opportunity, bringing visitors into the area while strengthening community pride and promoting the historical significance of Franklin County.
The Tennessee America 250 grant program is administered by the Tennessee State Museum on behalf of the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial. The second round of grant funding was highly competitive, with 365 applications requesting more than $6.3 million in funding. The commission ultimately awarded full or partial grants to 194 projects across 73 counties, totaling approximately $2.27 million.
Ashley Howell, Executive Director of the Tennessee State Museum and Chair of the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial, said the upcoming anniversary will feature events and programs across the state.
“I am inspired by the excitement across the state to commemorate our nation’s 250th anniversary,” Howell said.
All projects funded through the second round of grants must be completed by April 30, 2027.
