Rebels Come Up Short in Overtime Battle With Giles County

Friday night’s boys matchup carried momentum, expectation, and urgency — and it delivered a grind.

The Franklin County Rebels entered the night riding a three-game winning streak and looking to avenge a January 20 loss at Giles County, where they fell 66–55. This time, the Rebels came out with better energy and focus, opening the game with a narrow 16–15 lead after the first quarter.

Franklin County went with the same lineup that sparked its comeback win at Lawrence County earlier in the week — Brandon Walker, Austin Heath, Monte Johnson, Jayden Cisco, and Brody Goff — and leaned heavily on that group throughout the night.

It quickly became a tough shooting night for the Rebels, particularly from the perimeter. With points hard to come by, Franklin County was forced to rely on effort, defense, and grit to stay within striking distance.

With the Rebels struggling offensively in the second quarter, Brandon Walker put the team on his back, scoring all 15 of Franklin County’s points in the period. He finished the night with a game-high 27 points, keeping the Rebels within reach as they trailed 35–31 at halftime.

Giles County stretched the lead in the third quarter and appeared to seize control, building a double-digit advantage and taking a 47–40 lead into the fourth. But Franklin County responded with its best defensive stretch of the night.

The Rebels locked in defensively and held Giles County to just five points in the fourth quarter. Walker and Monte Johnson scored five points apiece during the rally, while Jayden Cisco added two, as Franklin County outscored the Bobcats 12–5 to force overtime.

Tied at 52, Franklin County had a chance to win it in regulation after getting the ball back with just over four seconds remaining. However, confusion on the inbound led to a turnover, and Giles County was unable to convert at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Franklin County continued to generate quality looks, but shots would not fall. Monte Johnson scored the Rebels’ lone basket in overtime and finished with 11 points, while Austin Heath added seven and Cisco chipped in nine. Missed opportunities and limited depth began to show as the Bobcats pulled away late.

Cason Howard and Colt Ogle made the key plays down the stretch for Giles County, extending the lead beyond Franklin County’s reach and sealing a 57–54 Bobcats win.

The loss drops Franklin County to 9–17 overall and 2–4 in district play, currently sitting third behind Giles County (6–1) and Tullahoma (6–0).

The Rebels will face another difficult test Tuesday night on the road against Tullahoma. The Wildcats have won 12 straight games, are ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, and hold a 19–4 overall record after handing Franklin County a 90–32 loss earlier this season.
