ESTILL SPRINGS, Tenn. — The Estill Springs Police Department has released details regarding an investigation involving members of a local Cub Scout troop who were distributing flyers for a food drive earlier this month.
According to a press release issued February 24, the incident occurred on February 18, 2026. Police received a report that Cub Scouts were going door-to-door in Estill Springs as part of earning a merit patch when several children knocked on the door of a residence.
The adults accompanying the scouts reported that the homeowner answered the door while allegedly brandishing what appeared to be a handgun equipped with a strobing light, and that the weapon was pointed in the direction of the children.
Officers took multiple statements from the adults present and launched an investigation into the complaint.
According to the release, the homeowner was later contacted and stated that he used only a flashlight to see who was at the door and that no firearm was present during the interaction.
Police reported that all information gathered during the investigation was presented to the District Attorney’s Office for review. After discussions with prosecutors, it was determined that there was not sufficient probable cause to pursue a criminal indictment.
In the statement, the department acknowledged that some individuals may be dissatisfied with the outcome but emphasized that officers pursued all avenues and conducted due diligence in reviewing the complaint.
The department also stated it has offered to partner with the Cub Scouts to host future community events that would provide a safe and positive environment for scouts to interact with local residents.
