The Franklin County Board of Education voted unanimously, 7–0, Monday night to appoint Dr. Roger D. Alsup as the next Director of Schools.
Dr. Alsup will officially assume the role on July 1, 2026, following the conclusion of the 2025–2026 academic year. He will succeed Dr. Carey E. Holman, who is completing his tenure with the district.
Currently serving as Deputy Director of Schools and Human Resources Supervisor, Dr. Alsup brings more than a decade of experience within Franklin County Schools. Board Chair Cleijo Walker cited continuity, institutional knowledge, and demonstrated leadership as key factors in the Board’s decision.
“We are fortunate to have Dr. Alsup as our next Director of Schools,” Walker said. “He and his family are embedded in our community, and he is well versed in all aspects of the Franklin County School System. Having worked closely with Dr. Holman for the last two years, the transition should be a smooth one.”
Dr. Alsup previously served as Principal of Franklin County High School from 2016 to 2024, where he was named 2021 Franklin County Principal of the Year. Under his leadership, the school’s TVAAS composite score improved from Level 1 to Level 5, chronic absenteeism was reduced by more than four percent, and several campus safety initiatives were implemented. Those efforts included controlled access entry points and active shooter tabletop exercises conducted in partnership with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
“I am truly honored to step into the role of Director of Schools for Franklin County,” Alsup said. “My focus remains clear: keeping our schools safe and ensuring Franklin County continues the push in academic achievement.”
Dr. Alsup also brings leadership experience from outside the district, including service as a Major in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He earned a Bronze Star for his role in the reconstruction of Fallujah, Iraq, and holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Saint Louis University.
Outgoing Director Dr. Holman expressed confidence in the transition, praising Dr. Alsup’s leadership, character, and commitment to the district.
Dr. Alsup will spend the remainder of the school year working alongside Dr. Holman and the Board of Education to ensure a seamless leadership transition for students, faculty, and families across Franklin County.
