Arnold Air Force Base to Conduct Annual Prescribed Burns

Arnold Air Force Base, TN – Residents near Arnold Air Force Base may soon notice smoke rising from the area, but base officials want the public to know there is no cause for alarm.

Arnold AFB Natural Resources staff are preparing to begin their annual prescribed burning program, a carefully planned land management practice designed to maintain healthy ecosystems across the installation.

From forests to grasslands, many ecosystems at the base have adapted to — and in some cases depend on — natural disturbances such as storms, floods, insect infestations and fires. Human activities like timber harvesting, mowing and land clearing can also create disturbances. Prescribed fire allows land managers to safely mimic those natural processes.

Officials say the visible column of smoke is often the only sign that a burn is taking place. The controlled fires help manage habitat by reducing plant competition, clearing excess vegetation and lowering the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.

Smoke management is a critical part of the planning process. Base personnel use weather data, forecasts and computer modeling tools to predict smoke movement before ignition. During the burn, teams closely monitor smoke behavior and its potential impact on nearby communities. If necessary, adjustments can be made by changing the timing of ignition or altering the firing pattern.

Proper smoke management helps reduce potential health risks associated with air quality, minimize visibility concerns for drivers and limit disruptions to outdoor activities.

Base officials emphasize that prescribed burning is a long-standing, science-based practice that supports both environmental health and wildfire prevention efforts.
