Some Winchester Citizens want "Jake Brakes" Stopped

Some residents want the braking to stop

Due to concerns about excessive noise at inconvenient times, residents have requested that the Winchester City Council prohibit the use of compression-release engine brakes, commonly known as “Jake brakes,” within the city limits.

A “Jake brake” refers to a type of braking system used in diesel trucks, which operates by opening exhaust valves to the cylinders just before the end of the compression stroke. This action releases compressed gas trapped in the cylinders, thereby slowing down the vehicle.

Winchester Mayor Sean Crabtree stated that the council will consider this request and conduct further research to determine the most suitable measures to address the issue.
