The Huntland Lady Hornets secured a strong pair of wins last week, first overcoming long-time rival Moore County 10-7 on Wednesday before defeating Grundy County 10-6 on Friday.

In Wednesday’s contest, Moore County struck first with a run in the top of the opening inning, courtesy of an RBI single from Annie Leigh Ross. Huntland responded in the bottom half, reclaiming the lead with a single from Catara Johnson and a defensive miscue that plated two runs. Moore County capitalized on a Huntland error in the second to tie the game at 2-2, but Lily Jackson delivered a key RBI double to give Huntland a 4-2 advantage heading into the third.

The lead shifted again in the fourth inning as Moore County mounted a four-run rally, highlighted by a double from Raegan Ross and a pair of fielding errors. The Lady Hornets answered promptly, with Kinah Mason singling to center to bring the game back to even at 6-6.

The decisive blow came in the sixth inning. Analyn Riddle singled to score two runs, and Peyton Counts followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 10-6. Huntland would hold on for the win despite a late run from Moore County.

Mason earned the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings while allowing only one earned run on eight hits, striking out 10 and walking one. Offensively, Huntland tallied 14 hits, with multi-hit games from Emily Stewart, Molly Tipps, Riddle, Millie Walker, Jackson, and Johnson. Riddle, Counts, Mason, and Jackson each recorded two RBIs, while Walker added two stolen bases.

Moore County was led by Whitney Fanning, who went 3-for-4, and Jenny Sanders, who added two hits and two stolen bases. The Raiderettes totaled five stolen bases as a team.

On Friday, Huntland carried that momentum into a 10-6 win over Grundy County. The Lady Hornets jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning with contributions from Johnson, Jackson, and Riddle. Grundy County responded in the second with three runs of their own, tying the game. An inside-the-park home run by Ali Merrell in the third gave the Lady Jackets a brief 4-3 lead.

Once again, Huntland responded swiftly. RBI singles from Mason and Riddle, along with a sacrifice fly from Counts, put the Lady Hornets back on top, 6-4. Grundy would tie it in the fourth, but Huntland’s offense delivered once more. Jackson’s two-run single and an error extended the lead to 10-6, where it remained for the rest of the game.

Riddle earned the win, going four innings and allowing five earned runs on five hits, striking out four. Mason collected the save. Jackson led the offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Walker added two hits as well.

Shrum paced Grundy County with two hits and two RBIs from the bottom of the lineup, and the Lady Jackets finished with four stolen bases.

With two solid wins under their belt, The Lady Hornets look to complete the season sweep against their Rival on Tuesday at 6PM on the road.
