A major bridge replacement project is now underway in Coffee County at Exit 117 over I-24. The contract, worth just over $18.2 million, was awarded to Jones Bros. Contractors, LLC. The work is expected to be completed by April 30, 2027.
The new structure will include three lanes—one for each direction and a center turn lane—along with 8-foot-wide shoulders for added safety and improved traffic flow.
Starting Sunday night, April 13, 2025, crews will begin setting up barrier rails, which will require short-term closures of the on- and off-ramps at Exit 117. Only one ramp will be closed at a time, and signs will be placed in advance to notify drivers. Lane closures along I-24 will also occur at night to allow space for construction equipment and barriers.
Despite the ongoing work, the current bridge will stay open with one lane of traffic maintained in each direction. The new bridge will be built next to the existing one, allowing vehicles to continue moving through the area without major disruptions.
Any traffic closures needed for construction or changes in traffic patterns will happen only at night or during weekends, as outlined in the project’s contract. TDOT will give advance notice of these changes so drivers can plan accordingly.
Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through the construction zone, watch for posted signs, and expect occasional delays. Weather could affect the schedule, and any changes due to rain or other issues will be announced.
Before heading out, check current road conditions through the TDOT SmartWay Map or call 511. And remember—stay off your phone and stay safe while driving.
